The Project aims to ensure that the Tanzania Communities are lifted out of poverty and food security is ensured in a changing climate through Climate Smart Economic Empowerment thematic area. It is very important and relevant to the Iringa and Kilolo Community as the changing climate has adversely affected production and the dependency in agriculture by over 80% of the Community members is at risk.
The project is supported by Norwegian Church Aid. IOP has received over 480,000US$ to provide different services to the households having Foster Children, Low-income families and Community Members to empower them economically in the changing climatic condition.
The Foster Family Project: The project supports the families with two or more children in addition to their own (biological) children. The IOP Foster Family Project started in 2003 in effort to encourage local families to take in orphaned children. The program supported over 500 children living in over 200 families within the project area. The project carries one of the best supports to the families which can not afford to care for their children.
The Foster Family Program is in need of more supporters and partners to continue with providing material support to families in the form of mosquito nets, food vouchers, school fees and bedding. This is very important in order to reduce the burden faced by the foster parents (most of them are above 60years) in raising the orphans. It is equally important that families are supported to lift up their economy by initiating Income Generating Activities like avocado farming, poultry, veggie and other related sustainable projects. Any person willing to support one or more families, is highly welcome to contact us.
From 2003-2019, the project trained the community on different things including Environmental Protection, Hygiene, Parenting, Public Resources expenditures tracking, Village Community Banks and Income Generating Activities like fruit growing and veggie gardens which use drip irrigation. During the NCA's Country Strategy 2020-2024, IOP will focus on Climate Smart Economic Empowerment.
This thematic area will ensure that Communities become lifted out of poverty and are ensured with food security in a changing climate. Youth and Women will be prioritized to ensure that they own the economy through access to agricultural information, quality agricultural inputs and that they sell their products to the known and reliable markets.
